THE TETHYS INSTITUTE ONLUS
Founded in 1986, the Tethys Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of cetaceans and the Mediterranean. Its professionalism in scientific research at an international level, with hundreds of accredited publications, makes it one of the most qualified institutions in the sector. Based on Tethys’ research, and at its suggestion, in 1999 the governments of Italy, France and the Principality of Monaco established the Pelagos Sanctuary for cetaceans, a protected marine area that boasts one of the largest concentrations of whales and dolphins in the Mediterranean. Tethys has monitored the eight species of cetaceans that populate the Sanctuary for 28 years, supplying the scientific information needed to safeguard them.
CYCLING RIVIERA: COASTAL PARK OF THE RIVIERA OF FLOWERS
In 2000 the Riviera of Flowers saw the beginning of a long-awaited epic project, one that had been anticipated for a century, the doubling of the railroad tracks and their moving uphill. With the moving of the trains inland an extremely valuable area of land right beside the sea was freed up. This is where the railway linking Italy and France had been completed in 1870. The authorities decided to seize this incredible opportunity and set up a society named Area 24 SpA, giving them the task of transforming the location of the old railway tracks into a true natural coastal park, crossed by a 24 km long cycle-pedestrian path.
